５月24日、台湾の司法院大法官は、婚姻を男女間に限定した現行の民法は意見であり無効であるという判決を下した。「婚姻平権」を規定した民法改正案はまだ可決されていないが、この判決によって、台湾は同性婚姻が憲法によって保護されるべき権利であることを司法当局が宣言した亜細亜で最初の国となった。
ところで、台湾では昨年の10月に台湾人パートナーとの婚姻を拒否された仏蘭西人が自殺するという事件が起こっていたのだった；
