1996年に出たThe Roald Dahl Cookbookからの抜粋*1。
ロアルド・ダール*2によると、1930年代は「チョコレートの黄金時代」。現在でも愛されている英米のチョコレートのブランドは大体この時代に登場した。例えば、キット・カットは1937年。

So there you have it. In music, the equivalent would be the golden age of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. In painting, it was the equivalent of the Italian Renaissance and the advent of Impressionism at the end of the 19th century; in literature, Tolstoy, Balzac and Dickens.

そういえば、ダールはティム・バートンの『チャーリーとチョコレート工場』*3の原作者だった*4。

ところで、ダールにとってはチョコレート＝チョコ・バーであるかのようだ。上掲の文章で語られる「チョコレート」はどれも「バー」である。何だかジバニャンみたいな奴だな。自分にとってチョコレートといえばやはり板チョコだぜという人、或いは何といってもマーブル！　という人はやはり別の〈チョコレート史〉を求めなければならないだろう。
