１月11日の夜、印度最南端のタミル・ナードゥ州*1の海岸に80頭以上のゴンドウクジラ（pilot whale）が打ち上げられた。12日 の段階で、36頭以上が救出され、海に戻されたが、方向感覚が狂い、浜に戻ってきてしまう者もいるという。この混乱は群のリーダーの不在のためでもあるという。
ゴンドウクジラ（pilot whale）はその名前にも拘わらず、動物分類学上は鯨ではなく海豚である。
