ポリフォニーの起源 - Living, Loving, Thinking, Again

少し前には、諾威国立図書館で、幻のディズニー映画のフィルムが偶々発見されるということがあった*1。

ケンブリッジのSt John’s College*2の大学院生Giovanni Varelli氏は、大英図書館所蔵の西暦900年前後に書かれたマニュスクリプトの或る頁の下部にポリフォニックな合唱曲の断片の譜面が書かれているのを偶々発見した。彼は大英図書館でインターン中だった。現在知られている最古のポリフォニーは西暦1000年前後と推定されているWinchester Troper*3に収録されたものなので、今回の発見はポリフォニーの起源をさらに100年昔に遡らせることになる。

He*4 said the unknown composer was already experimenting with the style, breaking the rules as they then stood. “What’s interesting here is that we are looking at the birth of polyphonic music and we are not seeing what we expected. Typically, polyphonic music is seen as having developed from a set of fixed rules and almost mechanical practice. This changes how we understand that development precisely because whoever wrote it was breaking those rules. It shows that music at this time was in a state of flux and development. The conventions were less rules to be followed than a starting point from which one might explore new compositional paths.”

勿論作曲者が誰なのかはわからないが、Giovanni Varelli氏はEastern Palaeofrankishという記譜法から、現在の独逸北西部、デュッセルドルフ或いはパーダーボルン*5辺りの修道院で作曲されたのではないかと推定している。その曲は、イングランド生まれでゲルマニアに基督教を伝道し、殉教して、独逸の守護聖人となった聖ボニファティウス*6を讃えたもの。
拙blogでは、「ポリフォニック」という言葉が１回、「ポリフォニー」が１回登場している。「ポリフォニック」は柴田寿子「古典をめぐる思想史学の冒険」*7からの引用*8、「ポリフォニー」はドゥルーズの「ホイットマン」（in 『批評と臨床』）からの引用で*9、どらも音楽とは直接の関係はない。
