Indonesian TV watchdog: 'Crayon Shin-chan' is essentially pornography

JAKARTA--A regulatory body here labeled a popular Japanese anime show as borderline “pornography” for its showing of bare buttocks, scantily clad women and other bawdy scenes.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), a state-run broadcasting watchdog, issued a warning on Sept. 22 to a local television station that runs “Crayon Shin-chan.”

KPI advised the RCTI television station to cut some parts of the show or to change the broadcast time to late-night hours.

A public relations official at RCTI said the station won't back down.

“I don’t know why it's not good,” the official said. “Maybe one of the episodes that aired weeks ago was the problem. We will continue airing it without change as usual.”

Agatha Lily, a senior official at KPI, told The Asahi Shimbun that “Crayon Shin-chan” is not for children.

“The character Shin-chan fools around with his bare bottom exposed,” she said. “He also noses around people on dates. The show features a lot of female characters in seductive garments that emphasize cleavage.

“It’s essentially pornography,” she said.

“Crayon Shin-chan” was originally a serial comic strip that Yoshito Usui (1958-2009) created for an adult-oriented magazine in 1990. It featured a mischievous kindergarten urchin named Shin-chan and became an animated show in 1992. It has remained on the air in Japan.

The Indonesian version of the show appeared around 2000, and character goods are now sold in a variety of shops in the country.

Although “Crayon Shin-chan” is not as popular as “Doraemon,” another classic Japanese anime show, it is still one of the more popular television shows on Sundays, according to an Indonesian citizens group that researches television ratings.

アニメ『クレヨンしんちゃん』*1がインドネシアで「本質的にポルノグラフィ（essentially pornography）」と認定されたということなのだが、日本でもこの番組は例えばPTAの評判は悪かったわけだ。ところで、『クレヨンしんちゃん』*2というのは『週刊漫画アクション』に連載されていたわけで、大人向きの漫画として書かれたわけだ。単行本も大人向きとして刊行されている*3。そうだったら、エログロ上等！　ということになる。現在一般的に抱かれている子ども向き或いはファミリー向きというイメージは、アニメまたはキャラクター・グッズに基づくものだろう。アニメは最初から夜７時台に放送されていたので、そもそも企画の段階から子ども向き或いはファミリー向きということを狙っていたのだろう。だからこそ、かつての日本でも、今回のインドネシアでも問題になるのだろう。

ところで、『ガーディアン』の記事を読んで、アニメメ『クレヨンしんちゃん』は過去に韓国やヴェトナムでも検閲に引っかかったことがあるということを知った。どんな箇所にクレームがついたのかはわからないけど。『ガーディアン』の記事を読んだ方はまた、英語の語彙がまた増えることになるだろう。moonの「月」という名詞ではなく、けつを出すという意味の動詞としての用法。
