Bernard E. Rollin The Frankenstein Syndrome: Ethical and Social Issues in the Genetic Engineering of Animals*1からのメモ。Rollinがこの本で論じているのはバイオテクノロジー(遺伝子操作)であるが、原子力問題を考える上でも示唆的なのではないか。

(…) insofar as scientific ideology has tended to stress the value-free nature of science and to schematize the role of scientists as getting on with the job, something of a “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” mentality tends to dominate the scientific community. Reflective forethought, ethical and prudential, is thus ideologically suppressed and lost in the thrill of the chase--”Come Watson―the game's afoot.” And this tendency is perfectly understandable; all of us share it to some extent―any human activity, pursued with genuine passion, resists retardation, even for the most rational reasons. When we are heading for the beach on our day off, we don't stop to check the tires, however wise it may be to do so. (p.69)
ところで、この本ではマイケル・クライトンの小説『ジュラシック・パーク』に対するバイオテクノロジー業界の反応が採り上げられている(p.72ff.)。クライトンは先端科学からのextrapolation(外挿/敷衍)を批判されている。それに対して、著者は”Such extapolation, in a positive vein, is practiced all the time by the industry to promote public acceptance of biotechnology―witness the promise to cure human genetic disease by biotechnology; this is certainly plausible, but still technically distant.”と述べている(p.76)。これも「原子力村」ではお馴染みのこと。
