以前からこのイスラエル系仏蘭西人のシンガーには惹かれていたのだが、Keren Annの101を聴く。凄く大雑把な表現をすれば、久しぶりにヘヴィなロックを聴いたなという感じ。彼女の曲にはアップ・テンポのものは殆どなく、そのヘヴィさは走り出そう・逃げ出そうとする曲がひっ捉まえられて、後ろに戻されそうになって、それに抗して曲が進むところに生成するので、必然的に曲のスピードは遅くなる。歌詞をじっくりと読み込んでいくと、とにかくダークで強迫的な内容が続くのだが、それでも惹き込まれてしまう。例えば、第1曲目の”My Name Is Trouble”*2;
「死(death)」と「息(breath)」が韻を踏んでいるわけだ*3。
My name is trouble
My first name's mess
No need to greet me
I'm here to confess
That if you let me hold you I won't hold my breath
And if you let me love you I will love till death
My chase is endless
I tend to obsess
No game lives up to
My need to possess
But if you let me hold you I won't hold my breath
And if you I will love you to deathI'm petrified of emptiness. And let aside the loneliness. The lovers tend to break me in two. If you were to come back to me in pieces or in melody. There couldn't be a better way through.
My name is trouble
My first name's mess
Born to deceive you
Brought up to redress
And if you let me hold you I won't hold my breath
But if you make me need you, I will need you less
I'm petrified of emptiness. And let aside the loneliness. The lovers tend to break me in two. If you were to come back to me in pieces or in melody. There couldn't be a better way through.
My name is trouble
My first name's mess
No need to greet me
I'm here to confess
That if you let me hold you I won't hold my breath
And if you let me love you I will love till death
If you let me hold you I won't hold my breath
And if you let me love you I will love till death
