The Sensual World

ケイト･ブッシュのDirector's Cutの第１曲目である”Flower of the Mountain”。旧作の新解釈たるこのアルバムの中で、この曲は歌詞が大幅に変更され、さらにタイトルまで変えられている。The Sensual Worldに収録されたときにはアルバム･タイトルと同じ” The Sensual World”と題されていた。最初ケイト･ブッシュはジェイムズ･ジョイスの『ユリシーズ』の１節を歌おうとして、作家の孫であるStephen James Joyceが代表を務めるInternational James Joyce Foundationに引用の許可を申請したが、許可が下りず、彼女は仕方なくオリジナルの歌詞を書いた*2。しかし、今回はすんなり許可が下りた。ただ、ジョイスは1941年に亡くなっており、今年が没後70年なので、来年になればジョイスのテクストは誰もが自由に使用することができるようになるのだが*3。

CDの歌詞をそのまま書き写したのだけれど、先ず何よりも目に付くのは小文字（yes）から始まっていること。また、最初から最後までコンマもピリオドもないこと。これはかなり目をくらくらさせる。ただ、反復される小文字のyesがコンマやピリオドの代用として機能しているということはあるのだが。Ｙさんのご教示によれば、” stepping out of the page into the sensual world”の部分がケイト･ブッシュのオリジナルで、それ以外は全て『ユリシーズ』の最後の部分からの引用である。

And then our arrows of desire rewrite the speech, mmh, yes,

And at first with the charm around him, mmh, yes,
He loosened it so if it slipped between my breasts
He'd rescue it, mmh, yes,
And his spark took life in my hand and, mmh, yes,
I said, mmh, yes,
But not yet, mmh, yes,
Mmh, yes.

どちらの方が好きかというのは人それぞれなのだろうけど、〈歌詞〉ということに限って言えば、こちらの方がいいんじゃないかという気もする。また、こちらからはより直接的に”Song of Solomon”を連想してしまった――セックス／エクリチュールというテーマ。
