先週からケイト･ブッシュのDirector's Cutを聴いているのだが。
”Song of Solomon”、”Never Be Mine”、”And So Is Love”。”Never Be Mine”は元々The Sensual Worldに収められており、あとの２つは”The Red Shoesに収められていた。改めて繰り返して聴き、また歌詞を読み返してみて、どれも正統的なラヴ･ソングだなと思った。

”Never Be Mine”はせつなく、”And So Is Love”はしみじみ。

”And So Is Love”ではエリック･クラプトンがまるで自己パロディなんじゃないかと思うほどクラプトンっぽいギターを弾いているのだが、今回はそれも納得してしまう。ところで、歌詞の中の” life is sweet”はオリジナルでは”life is sad”だった*2。この変更によって意味が全く正反対になってしまったのだ。「人生は悲しく、そして愛も悲しい」から「人生は甘く、そして愛も甘い」へ。オリジナルを聴いた時には、この歌詞にこのクラプトンの弾きっぷりというのはやり過ぎなんじゃないかと思ったのだが。まあ、”life is sad”と” life is sweet”とで、どちらが好きかというのは人それぞれなのだろうけど。Mojoのインタヴューで、Keith Cameronは”And So Is Love”の歌詞の変更について突っ込んでいるのだが、ケイト･ブッシュ本人は、
と答えている。
Because I thought it was so bloody depressing(laughs). I thought I couldn't just leave it in such a downer. That was really why. I didn't want to do it as me then, it was me now. (p.84)
