ハイエクを巡って幾つか - Living, Loving, Thinking, Again

米国でフリードリッヒ・フォン・ハイエク *1の『隷属への道（The Road to Serfdom）』（シカゴ大学出版局）が再び売れ始めている。それまでは年間7000部だったのが、2009年には27000部売れている。さらに、今年の６月に右翼的なTVホストGlenn Beckがその番組でプッシュすると、忽ちAmazon.comで第１位、１か月足らずの間に１万部が売れてしまった。
『隷属への道』刊行当初の米国での反応；

It was in the United States, however, that Hayek met with his greatest success — and the most intense hostility. Rejected by several trade publishers, “The Road to Serfdom” was picked up by Chicago, which scheduled a modest print run. It got a boost when Henry Hazlitt, a prominent free-marketeer, assessing it on the cover of The New York Times Book Review in September 1944, proclaimed it “one of the most important books of our generation,” a call to “all those who are sincere democrats and liberals at heart to stop, look and listen.” The political scientist Herman Finer, on the other hand, denounced it as “the most sinister offensive against democracy to emerge from a democratic country for many years.” But the most important response came from the staunchly anti-Communist Reader’s Digest, which ran a condensed version of the book in April 1945, with reprints available through the Book of the Month Club for 5 cents each. The condensation sold more than a million copies.

さらに、1945年には漫画版が出て、ジェネラル・モーターズがパンフレットとして頒布した。
1974年にノーベル経済学賞を受賞した頃には、ハイエクは一部の信奉者を除いては忘れられた存在であった。現在でも、Justin WolfersがJSTOR*2で被言及頻度を検索したところ、Adam Smithが30,708、Karl Marxが25,626、John Maynard Keynesが4,945、Milton Friedmanが8,924なのに対して、Friedrich von HayekとFriedrich HayekとFH Hayekを合わせて1561。因みに、Lawrence Summersは（Larry Summersを入れて）2064*3。
さて、SCHUESSLER氏は”sunny view”という表現を使っているが、ハイエクとチリの独裁者ピノチェト将軍との関係。ピノチェトのクーデタとミルトン・フリードマン *4との関係はよく語られているが、ハイエク自身とピノチェトとの関係はあまり語られてはいないのではないか。実際、ハイエクは或る意味ではフリードマン以上にピノチェトに入れ上げていた。それについては、取り敢えず、

JENNIFER SCHUESSLERのテクストに戻ると、『隷属への道』が英国で刊行された時のケインズとジョージ・オーウェルの反応が紹介されている。ケインズ曰く、“Morally and philosophically, I find myself in agreement with virtually the whole of it.”また、オーウェルは「国家の圧制」と市場の圧制とどっちが酷いかと問う。
ハイエクとケインズを巡っては、20年前に間宮陽介『ケインズとハイエク』を読んだが、その内容についてはあまり憶えていない。Orz
