「ヒップホップ世代」とか - Living, Loving, Thinking, Again

長らく所謂「ベビー・ブーマー」は「成長したくない世代」であると考えられてきた。しかし、「真のピーター・パン」は「ブーマー」の次の世代だという話。或いは、（エリクソン＝小此木啓吾 *1の言葉を使えば）米国人の「モラトリアム」は長期化し続けているという話。

National surveys reveal that an overwhelming majority of Americans, including younger adults, agree that between 20 and 22, people should be finished with school, working and living on their own. But in practice many people in their 20s and early 30s have not yet reached these traditional milestones.

少しネタを拾っておくと、1980年に初婚年齢の中間値は23歳だったが、現在では男が27歳、女が26歳である。初婚年齢の上昇は35歳以降に第一子を出産する女性の増加を導いている。また、この傾向は米国におけるあらゆるエスニック集団、収入集団で認められるという。18〜34歳の男女は平均で親の収入の10％を受け取っている。また、親と同居する人の増加。2007年には25歳の白人男性の４分の１が親と暮らしているが、2000年には５分の１、1970年には８分の１だった。
その主な原因は、1970年代以降の米国経済の脱工業化に伴う高学歴化である。最終的に学校を卒業する年齢が高くなるので、従来〈成熟〉の指標とされてきた就職、結婚等々は繰り延べされる。しかしその一方で、従来の〈成熟〉の指標が指標として機能しなくなったということもある。かつては結婚や出産は「大人であることの定義（definition of traditional adulthood）」の一部をなしていたが、今や「ライフスタイルの選択」の問題となっている。現在米国における出産の40％は「未婚の母」によるものであり*2、その一方で40代の女性の20％には子どもがいない。

ところで、「ベビー・ブーマー」というのは（日本の団塊の世代とは違って）分厚い層をなしている。大まかに言って、1946年（戦争中の1943年という説もあり）から1965年頃までに生まれた米国人はbaby boomerと呼ばれる。「ブーマー」に続く世代はふつう「Ｘ世代」と呼ばれている（ダグラス・クープランドの小説『ジェネレーションＸ』とか）。また、「ヒップホップ世代（hip-hop generation）」ともいうらしい。Matt Masonは「ヒップホップ世代」を大まかに”those who grew up or are growing up after the boomers”と定義している（The Pirate’s Dilemma*3, p.175）。「ベビー・ブーマー」は「ロック」をその対抗文化的コアとした世代であり、「ヒップホップ世代」は「ヒップホップ」をその対抗文化的コアとしているということになる――”the baby boom generation remembers themselves using rock ‘n’ roll to shake up in the sixties and end the Vietnam War, as we are now reminded in TV ads for retirement plans.”（p.190）。また、Matt Mason曰く、

Many baby boomers consider this generation[hip-hop generation] apathetic compared to themselves. But before the war in Iraq even started, the hip-hop generation had organized the largest protests in history against the decision to go to war. Between January 3 and April 12, 2003, a total of thirty-six million people across the globe took part in almost three thousand protests. (p.191)

これは米国を超えた射程を持つ発言だけど、はたして米国以外で「ヒップホップ世代」という言い方が可能なのかどうか。
