Leigh A. Bortinsはエンジニアで、「ホームスクール」の擁護者で、「ホームスクール」をする親たちに教育サーヴィスを提供するClassical Communications Inc.*3のCEO。フィッシュ先生の紹介によれば、彼女は文法、それもたんに” the study of the formal structure of sentences”という意味ではなく” the study of the formal structure of anything”という意味での文法を重視する。
哲学者のMartha C. Nussbaumは現代教育の功利主義によって「科学とテクノロジー」の「人文的側面」すなわち「想像的で創造的な側面」や「厳密な批判的思考という側面」が切り縮められていることを批判する。それはデモクラシーの健康を損ねてしまう。それは”the development of the capacity to transcend the local prejudices of one’s immediate (even national) context and become a responsible citizen of the world”としてのhuman developmentの可能性を閉ざしかねないからだ。なお、Nussbaumが人文教育のうちでも古典教育で重視するのは「論理的構造への注目」と「沢山の異なったタイプのテクストに適用することができるテンプレートを生徒に提供すること」である。また、フィッシュ先生、オバマ政権の教育政策を批判して曰く、
歴史家で教育理論家のDiane Ravitchはかつては（上の引用で言及されている）旧ブッシュ政権のNo Child Left Behind政策の熱烈な支持者だったが、2007年に転向した。新自由主義的な教育政策に対して、以下のように批判しているという――”A faith in markets produced gamesmanship, entrepreneurial maneuvering and outright cheating, very little reflection on “what children should know” and very little thought about the nature of the curriculum.” 彼女の結論もBortinsやNussbaumと同じく、”Forget about the latest fad and quick-fix, and buckle down to the time-honored, traditional “study and practice of the liberal arts and sciences: history, literature, geography, the sciences, civics, mathematics, the arts and foreign languages.””というものである。
Unfortunately, at least according to Nussbaum, the trend toward a narrower and narrower vision of education is not being resisted by the Obama administration. Rather than decreasing the focus on testing and test preparation — a focus that reverses the relationship between test and content; the test becomes the content — “the administration plans to expand it.” Obama and his secretary of education, Arne Duncan (who, says Nussbaum, “presided over a rapid decline in humanities and arts funding” as head of the Chicago public schools), continue to implement the assumptions driving the Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind, chiefly the assumption that “individual income and national economic progress” should be education’s main goals.
Leigh A. Bortinsについての話を読んでいて思ったのだが。最近インターネット上で理系の人の外国語教育に対する提案というのは多いけれど、文法中心主義の徹底を訴える人って、あまりいないような気がする。それによって物事の「形式的な構造」に対する敏感さを涵養すること。これは将来人文系に進む学生だけではなく、デザインや音楽を目指す人や工学系を目指す人にとっても有益なんじゃないかとも思う。
