「読書行為(the act of reading)はパーソナルで、個別的で、秘密の出来事である」ということ;
コンラッドの”The Secret Sharer”は読んでいない(orz)。この短編小説については、
Others can see that I hold the book in my hands and am running my eyes from line to line, but what is going on inside my mind and feeling is hidden, unless I choose to make it public, to bring it out into the open. Even then I am unlikely to be able to communicate my feelings clearly. In the same way, the episode in narrator’s life recounted in “The Secret Sharer” would have remained secret if he had not chosen to write it down and publish it so all the world might read it. Conrad’s idea for this story would also have remained secret if he had not written the story. In this it would have been like all that host of unwritten novels we are told swarmed in Dostoevsky’s mind. My reading of “The Secret Sharer” would also remain secret unless I were to decide to talk about my reading, to teach the story, or to write an essay about it, such as this one. I have then told my own secret and have submitted my judgment of the story to the judgment of others. Literature, particularly story-telling in literature, as well as teaching and writing about literature, seems to have something essentially to do with the sharing of secret. (pp.138-139)
