I’ve been dying to make this record all my life as I’ve always loved these songs, many of which I learned as a child growing up in Ireland. I learned some from my father, some at school and some I learned as I was wandering around the universe, on my own.
Many of the songs on this record are stories of enduring and unconditional love, love that can’t be questioned by fires or floods. They are the beautifully borne pain of real people, who really existed. They teach that pain can be made into something positive and beautiful when one sings it, and so pain can be healed by singing, since songs are magic.
I consider all of these songs magical prayers and therefore not sad song at all. They are only sad to those who cannot feel the true ghosts of the people who arfe speaking through the songs. Love, and only enduring love, is the lesson they are giving and therefore, utter joy. They show that soul is everlasting.
For me, this is a song about love and sex. It’s certainly one of the sexiest songs I have ever heard. Obviously it is a love song, but, for me, it also has political undertones. The Lady represents Ireland and the song itself has a defiant ring to it. It was written in a time when it was against to write obviously about Ireland. So the poets and songwriters would refer to Ireland as a beautiful woman. And to their love of Ireland and their desire for the freedom, as being akin to the sexual love and desire for a woman who is compared with the land. She is a lily made of the twilight, the night and of magic. She is Ireland.
