ところで、パティ姐さんはライナーにそれぞれの楽曲についてのコメントを書き綴っているのだけれど、幾つかの曲についてはその楽曲の政治的意味について意識していることがわかる。例えば、”Everybody Wants to Rule the World”について――”I wasn’t familiar with it but the lyric and its political resonance touched me.” また、”Gimme Shelter”について――”In singing it I realized the potency of the song’s anti-war message and was struck again by Mick Jagger’s lyrical power.” 或いは、”The Boy In The Bubble”について――”Recently I was sitting in my café combining my mind for a relevant political content. The Boy In The Bubble came on.” 勿論、このアルバムが政治的なものに還元されてしまうわけではない。ニルヴァーナの”Smells Like Teen Spirit”へのコメント――”I identified with the lyrics, the schism of the performer, and felt the source of his anguish, the blessing and burden of being an artist.”というのはどうだ。
また、アルバムについて、”Twelve truly had a mind of its own, as if formed by an unanticipated inner narrative; like the moves on Alice’s chessboard, it became a combination of what is written and what we write ourselves.”と語られている。ここでいう”what we write ourselves”というのはどう意味なのか*3。一瞬、伝統へのコミットメント*4ということを思いついたのだが、さて？
最後に、カヴァーを飾るタンバリンの写真、これはロバート・メイプルソープを象徴する――
I met Robert Mapplethorpe in the summer of 1967, the year that four of these twelve songs were released. Robert stretched the goat skin, tattooed the surface with my astrological sign, and added the ribbons. He presented me with this tambourine on December 30th, 1967, my 21st birthday.
