Bikini vs.pajamas?

SONG Yujia “Bikini-clan sunbathers burn up their neighbors” Shanghai Daily 4 August 2006

Almost every sunny afternoon this summer, several foreigners, both men and women, have been sunbathing in scanty swimwear in the garden area at the Dongtai Huayuan complex on Dapu Road while many of their Chinese neighbors walk past under umbrellas.

“They (the sunbathers) look so indecent,” said a 45-year-old female elevator operator at the complex. “It is inappropriate to wear a bikini in public.”

“This is normal in my country,” said a young woman from the Czech Republic who was sunbathing at the apartment complex recently with three bikini-clad friends.
“People here go to the supermarket in their pajamas, why can’t we wear swimsuits in our garden? It’s the same thing,” said 18-year-old Silvia Petroyicoya from Slovakia.
A truly globalized city can provide a free, open space for people of different countries, ethnicities and cultures. Shanghai should be able to embrace different lifestyles.”
