Snapshot of Betty Friedan, pioneering feminist from Peoria

  • Born Feb. 4, 1921, in Peoria, (she died on her birthday) to Harry and Miriam Goldstein; high school valedictorian, 1938; graduate of Smith College, 1942.
  • Married Carl Friedan, 1947; they had three children, were divorced after 22 years; he died in December.
  • Published "The Feminine Mystique," 1963, which laid the groundwork for the modern feminist movement.
  • Helped found and was first president of the National Organization for Women, 1966; also was a founder, in 1969, of the group that became the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League and, in 1971, of the National Women's Political Caucus.
  • Published "The Second Stage," 1981, in which she upheld the importance of domestic life too; and "The Fountain of Age," 1993, about an active, engaged old age.
